Day Eight: Balance

Now that we’ve gotten landscape out of the way we can head back into the land of composition. Balance is a very important, and often under looked aspect of photography. Balance is the juxtaposition of elements in a frame giving each side of your photo equal attention. Let’s look at an example ​

The two building equally share space in the frame and neither of them seems more important than the other. ​

Is this photo balanced? If we look at this photo using the rule of thirds we notice the large left, rock is at the crossing point and the small rocks with the cliff face at the opposite set of crossing points. ​

Balance can also be symbolic. By placing the chess pieces so they are balanced the above image also tells us something about the importance of the pieces. Is the king equal to the four pawns? ​
